PostSubject: Review: New Super Mario Bros.   Fri May 23, 2008 5:53 am

I remember the old Super Mario World game for the Super Nintendo. It's unique platforming style, powerups, enimies, and boss battles made Mario a smash-hit. Now, 10 years later, after many games featuring Mario outside of his regular 2-D world battling Snake and Sonic, or racing around planets collecting small colored rocks, Nintendo finally decides to give us a fond memory of a game with the New Super Mario Bros.
The New Super Mario Bros should make you feel like you are right back in front of your old Super Nintendo now collecting dust in your attic. The only difference: Nintendo included a few new twists in this game. A brand new item has been included in this game: the Giga Mushroom. This mushroom, featured in many of the commercials, alows Mario to become giant, knocking down anything in his path. The more damage you do, the more life mushrooms you get after you power down. The contrast between the classic Goombas and tubes known worldwide with the modern-aged idea of the Giga Mushroom really gives a good sense of how diverse these levels can be
Each level also includes 3 golden coins. Collecting these and beating the level adds to your golden coin total. These golden coins can be spent to unlock special, locked sections on the main map (another classic) which gives you a chance to earn an item or a bunch of lives. In all, there are 8 worlds, with 8 different Bowser castles. The storyline could have been more diverse, though. After the first 7 boss levels, Peach is taken by Bowser Jr to the next world castle...over...and over.
The game also includes 16 minigames, which profide a form of entertainment after beating the game. Rebeating the game gives virtually no challenge since you already know what to do. Where would this game be without the minigame mode, the wireless connection mode( one card required) and the EXCLUSIVE CHALLENGE MODE CHEAT http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.kotaku.com/images/2006/07/challenge_mode.jpg&imgrefurl=http://kotaku.com/gaming/nsmb/secret-new-smb-challenge-mode-unveiled-185360.php%3Fmail2%3Dtrue&h=225&w=300&sz=24&hl=en&start=16&um=1&tbnid=lZyb_q4oIAiBQM:&tbnh=87&tbnw=116&prev=/images%3Fq%3DNew%2BSuper%2BMario%2BBros%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN
Overall, this game provides an enjoyable story mode, good 5-minute minigames, and a fusion of the past and present. More could have been put into the storyline though. Maybe next time
