| The Wii's Virtual Console store, which has delivered more than 200 classic titles over the last 18 months for Nintendo's svelte gaming machine, has been widely acknowledged as a boon for older players with warm and fuzzy memories of the games they played while growing up during the infancy of consoles. Alas, it hasn't done much to appease Nintendo fans who covetously gaze at the steady stream of original and exclusive downloadable games that have appeared on other consoles over the last couple of years, such as PlayStation 3's wonderfully wacky physics experiment Pain and the Xbox 360's popular puzzler Switchball. That envy may now be consigned to history thanks to Monday's North American launch of WiiWare, a new online service that is dedicated to delivering original and exclusive games for Nintendo's popular console. Six titles are available at the moment. I downloaded three this morning, the first of which, a role-playing game from Square-Enix called Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King, is WiiWare's ostensible flagship game. It costs 1,500 Wii Points, or about $15, which is quite deal, since, from what I can tell based on the hour I spent with it, this dungeon-crawling, kingdom-building game seems to have roughly the same production values and scope of most boxed, full-price Wii RPGs. The next title I downloaded was the beautiful and immediately engaging platformer LostWinds, which sees players controlling the world's breezes via a few flourishes of the Wii remote. It's one of those rare third-party games that actually makes fun and inventive use of the Wii's motion sensitive controls. $10 well spent. The last WiiWare game I checked out was Pop. The objective of this serene and hypnotic bit of entertainment is simply to pop bubbles that slowly float up from the bottom of the screen by pointing the Wii remote at them and pressing the A-button. Popping bubbles of the same colour creates chains and results in higher scores, while missing bubbles chops valuable seconds off the game's timer. Pop is a moderately addictive play that I suspect will end up being worth its modest $7 price.
I plan to try the other three launch games—VIP Casino: Blackjack, TV Show King, and Defend Your Castle—a little later this week, but so far I like what I see. WiiWare's original games look to be capable competitors for those available through Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade and Sony's PlayStation Store. The only problem I predict for WiiWare consumers (myself included) is running out of storage. The three games I downloaded ate up about a quarter of my Wii's onboard flash memory. And with new games planned for release every Monday from now on, a trip to the local electronics store to pick up an SD card (or two) appears to be in my future. | |
